Geoffrey Hinton: The journey of the 'Godfather of AI' who regretted his life's work
The life and work of the distinguished scientist, who shook the waters with his resignation from Google. How a classmate's idea made him one of the most influential scientists of our time
“Jeffrey Everest Hinton is internationally renowned for his work on artificial neural networks, especially how they can be designed to learn without the help of a human teacher. This could be the start of autonomous intelligent brain-like machines." This is how the Royal Society welcomed Geoffrey Hinton into its prestigious ranks, as early as 1998.
He himself, after a long journey of decades, did what he made his "machines" do: he learned from experience, became a carrier of deep learning that he developed and decided to speak freely about it. Geoffrey Hinton has stirred global waters with his decision to resign from Google, where for a decade he developed applications of artificial intelligence (AI) for the company, and to speak openly about the dangers of his "godfather".
The coin, the abusive father, the scientist family
The so-called "Godfather of AI" was born in 1947 in Wimbledon, London. His mother had warned him of two choices in life: either you become a scientist or a wasted body. He grew up, anyway, in a family tradition of scientists.
Hinton, in an interview with Toronto Life, recalls the moment when his curiosity about science was born. He was, as he says, four years old and was traveling with his mother by bus in the countryside. The bus had a seat that leaned back. Hinton took a coin from his pocket and placed it on the seat, but instead of sliding back, it slid forward, seemingly against gravity. This had been driving his imagination for 10 years.
As a teenager, says the same publication, he figured out that the coin's movement had something to do with the plush seat cover and the vibrations of the bus – a highly satisfying analysis. “Some people are quite capable of seeing things they don't understand and it doesn't raise any questions for them. I was not satisfied that something had violated my model for the world," he had said.
He is, moreover, the great-grandson of George Boole, the mathematician who invented Boole Algebra, which formed the basis of the science of Computer Science, Statistics and Programming and which – unlike elementary algebra – goes beyond the basic operations of addition and multiplication and adopts conjunction (and), disjunction (or) and negation, in the basis of truth value calculation.
At the same time, his great-grandfather, the mathematician Charles Hinton, coined the word "tesseract", for the analogue of the four-dimensional cube, while his father, Howard Everest Hinton, was a distinguished entomologist. While Hinton's mother was loving, he was abusive. “He liked people to think clearly. If you said something he considered rubbish, he called it 'rubbish'. He was not a sensitive thinker. He was not aggressive, but he was extremely tough," he has said. Their shared middle name, Everest, is in honor of a relative, after whom the famous peak was named, to commemorate his service as surveyor-general of India.
A classmate changes everything
The great journey, of course, in neural networks, in how the human brain works and how it can have other, extra-human applications, began at the private high school Clifton College where he studied, when a classmate impressed him by telling him that the human brain it might work like a hologram: countless pieces of information scattered across a massive database, as Wired writes. It's the 1960s and Geoffrey Hinton – enchanted and fascinated – decides to start understanding the workings of the brain. As the Anglo-Saxons would say, first things first.
"I was very excited about this idea," he has said. "It was the first time I understood how the brain can work."
So he found himself at the University of Cambridge, studying Experimental Psychology at the prestigious institution's King's College, where he initially planned to study Physiology and Physics, before switching to Philosophy and eventually obtaining a degree in Experimental Psychology. There, in fact, he realized that scientists did not really understand the workings of the brain. They couldn't figure out how the interactions between billions of neurons give rise to intelligence, Wired says.
He wanted to continue the tradition of scientists who had been struggling with the concept of artificial intelligence since the 1950s and a little earlier: most notably Alan Turing, who in 1950 published "Computer Machinery and Intelligence", where he proposed the "imitation game" ( Imitation game); but also by John von Neumann, in the 1940s, who used biological terms such as "memory", "organ" and "neuron" when he first described the critical architectural concepts of modern computing, according to Turing Prize website.
From carpentry to scientific coming of age
Finishing his studies in 1970 and until deciding what he wanted to do, he turned to carpentry, seeking more tangible joys. Two years later, in 1972, he decides that his heart is set on science. So he rushes to Edinburgh for his doctorate, where in 1978 he is appointed a doctor of artificial intelligence, as a student of Hugh Christopher Longett-Higgins, an expert in cognitive science. His studies took place at a time when past failures in the development of artificial intelligence had "frozen" research, interest and funding in the field. But he himself used to say: "If you think you have a really good idea and other people tell you it's absolute nonsense, then you realize you're on the right track."
His second scientific coming of age, following his high school revelation of a new way of understanding the human brain, comes in the early 80s, where, according to Wired, he begins his own crusade: to mimic the brain using hardware and computer software, with the goal of "deep learning", that is, computers learning through experience - in short, just like humans.
"I get particularly excited when we discover a way to make neural networks better – and when this is closely related to the way the brain works," he said, having already begun to examine whether in the human brain every memory could be spread over a neural network and not only at a certain point – the high school revelation remained for life present in his scientific state.
New life in USA
Like many in his scientific field throughout time, after his PhD he decided to seek better days in the United States. Initially, he joined a group of cognitive psychologists as a postdoctoral researcher at the Sloan Foundation of the University of California, San Diego. With this group, mainly collaborating with David Rumelhart and Ronald Williams, they proposed, in a series of publications in 1986, the "back-propagation algorithm", which allows the effective training of neural networks with the ultimate goal of minimize error.
At the same time, he was elected a professor in the leading Department of Computer Science at Carnegie-Mellon University. He held that position for just five years, after which he disagreed with the department's funding from the US Pentagon to develop missile defense applications. Besides, according to reports, the US Department of Defense funded most of the scientific programs.
Next came Toronto, where Hinton first became a Canadian Institutes of Advanced Research Fellow (CIFAR), appointed to the Department of Computer Science at the University of Toronto. In between, he spent three years – from 1998 to 2001 – setting up the Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit at University College London, then returning to Toronto.
The adventure of "deep learning"
From there, the long march towards the conquest of "deep learning" had begun. There, according to the Turing Prize website, Geoffrey Hinton conducted research with dozens of doctoral and postdoctoral fellows, many of whom went on to distinguished, independent careers. After all, he shared the Turing Prize with one of them, Jan LeKin. From 2004 to 2013 he was director of the CIFAR-funded Neural Computation and Adaptive Perception program.
Despite his... tangible doctorate from the University of Edinburgh, the Scottish institution named him an honorary doctorate in 2001, while in 1998 he was elected a member of the Royal Society.

For about 30 years, however, as international publications write, "deep learning" was considered an extreme scientific theory in academic research circles. He, however, remained committed to his research and to the forefront of AI developments, comparing the current boom in AI to the “Industrial Revolution or the discovery of electricity… or maybe the wheel,” in his own words.
The time of Google: A "madman", from the margins, to the center
But the time had come for his partial shift from academia to the practical application of his discoveries about the new possibilities of object classification and speech recognition. Moreover, in 2004, with a small amount of funding from CIFAR and the support of LeKin and Joshua Benzio, he founded the Neural Computation and Adaptive Perception project, a team of computer scientists, biologists, electrical engineers, neuroscientists, physicists and psychologists.
As Wired writes, by selecting these researchers, Hinton aimed to create a team of world-class thinkers dedicated to creating computational systems that mimic intelligence—or at least what we know about it, but also how the brain "sifts" a plenty of visual, auditory and written cues to understand and respond to her environment. Hinton believed that the creation of such a group would spur innovation in artificial intelligence and perhaps even change the way the rest of the world viewed it.
He appeared to be right. In 2012, with his students Alex Krzyzewski and Ilya Sutskever, he wins ImageNet, an image recognition competition involving a thousand different types of objects. This, of course, did not go unnoticed by Google and Andrew Ng, who had founded a "deep learning" project at the tech giant, primarily to develop voice recognition on Android phones and the then-defunct social networking platform Google+ in 2019. In 2013, Hinton finally joined the company along with other researchers from the University of Toronto, as Google spent $44 million to acquire the company that Hinton and his two students started.
"We stopped being the fringe freaks. We have now become the crazies of the core", as he himself has said. To add a few years later, in an interview with Toronto Life: "The reason I was so influential was because I was one of the few who believed in this approach and all the students who spontaneously believed in this approach came and worked with me . I had to choose, from the best, those who had good judgment. Good judgment meant they agreed with me," he had said with a laugh.
The "deep learning" revolution was inevitable, says Wired, but scientific advances such as speech recognition and artificial vision systems adopted by Microsoft, Google, Yahoo and other Internet giants were born earlier than expected, largely because of Hinton .
Resigning from Google, fears and… freedom
After this fascinating journey of so many decades, May 1, 2023 has arrived. Via The New York Times, Geoffrey Hinton – the scientist who received the 2018 Turing Prize and the 2012 Queen Elizabeth Adamantine Jubilee Medal, a man who never sits down because of a spinal problem he "inherited" since he was 19, plus a genetic deficiency in calcium metabolism that predisposes to osteoporosis – announces his decision to retire.
He cites his age ("I'm 76 now, I have to retire") and his fear that artificial intelligence will take dangerous paths if it falls into the wrong hands - as did Robert Oppenheimer, the "father" of the atomic bomb. Hinton felt that, now that he had no dependence on any company, he would be able, on the one hand, to speak openly about his views and, on the other hand, to devote himself to more philosophical works.
Last Monday, he officially joined a growing chorus of critics who say these companies are headed down mathematically dangerous paths with their aggressive campaigns to create products based on artificial intelligence, the technology that powers popular chatbots like ChatGPT.
According to his own words, a part of his soul now regrets his life's work. "I console myself with the usual excuse: if I hadn't done it, someone else would."
He is the same man who once asked himself, “Do you feel less human when you use a calculator? We are machines, we just reproduce biologically. Most people working with AI have no doubt that we are machines. We're just super fancy machines. We are special, wonderful machines."
However, the fullness of time came. According to the MIT Technology Review, Hinton says that the new generation of language models—specifically GPT-4, which OpenAI released in March—made him realize that machines are well on their way to becoming much smarter than than he originally thought; and certainly faster than his calculations, since, as the Washington Post writes, he recognized that, unlike nuclear weapons, there are no international regulations preventing or punishing the covert use of artificial intelligence by governments or companies.
"These things are completely different from us," he has told MIT Technology Review. "Sometimes I think it's like aliens have landed and people don't understand them because they speak English so well."
Hinton, the NYT reports, also said that when people asked him how he came to be working on a potentially dangerous technology, he would paraphrase Robert Oppenheimer, who had led the U.S. effort to build the atomic bomb: "When you see something that's technically appealing, go for it." He doesn't say it anymore...

Πρὶν ἀπὸ δύο χιλιάδες χρόνια ἔγραψε στὴν Ἀποκάλυψη ὅτι οἱ ἄνθρωποι θὰ σφραγίζωνται μὲ τὸν ἀριθμὸ 666.«Ὁ ἔχων νοῦν ψηφισάτω τὸν ἀριθμὸν τοῦ θηρίου· ἀριθμὸς γὰρ ἀνθρώπου ἐστί· καὶ ὁ ἀριθμὸς αὐτοῦ χξς´»12.
Τὸ 666 γιὰ τοὺς Ἑβραίους εἶναι σύμβολο οἰκονομίας. Οἱ Ἑβραῖοι, ὅπως ἀναφέρεται στὴν Παλαιὰ Διαθήκη, ἐπέβαλαν μιὰ συγκεκριμένη φορολογία στὰ ἔθνη ποὺ ὑποδούλωσαν μὲ διάφορους πολέμους.
Ἡ ἐτήσια φορολογία ἦταν 666 τάλαντα χρυσοῦ13. Τώρα, γιὰ νὰ ὑποτάξουν ὅλον τὸν κόσμο, βάζουν πάλι αὐτὸν τὸν παλιὸ φορολογικὸ ἀριθμό, ποὺ συνδέεται μὲ τὸ ἔνδοξο παρελθόν τους.
Γιʹ αὐτὸ δὲν θέλουν νὰ τὸν ἀντικαταστήσουν μὲ ἄλλον ἀριθμό. Τὸ 666 δηλαδὴ εἶναι τὸ σύμβολο τοῦ μαμωνᾶ. Τὸ πῆραν ἀπὸ τὰ σταθμὰ τοῦ χρυσοῦ – δὲν ἤξεραν αὐτὸ ποὺ ἀναφέρει ὁ Ἅγιος Ἰωάννης στὴν Ἀποκάλυψη –, ἀλλὰ δὲν παύει νὰ εἶναι μαμωνᾶς.
Τὸ Εὐαγγέλιο ὅμως λέει «ἢ Χριστὸ ἢ μαμωνᾶ». «Οὐ δύνασθε Θεῷ δουλεύειν καὶ μαμωνᾷ»14.Τὰ πράγματα προχωροῦν κανονικά. Στὴν Ἀμερικὴ τὰ σφραγισμένα σκυλιὰ ἐκπέμπουν μὲ τὸν πομπὸ καί, τάκ, τὰ βρίσκουν.
Ἔτσι ξέρουν τὸ κάθε σκυλὶ ποῦ βρίσκεται. Ὅσα σκυλιὰ δὲν ἔχουν τὴν μάρκα τους καὶ εἶναι ἀδέσποτα τὰ σκοτώνουν μὲ ἀκτίνες λέιζερ. Μετὰ θὰ ἀρχίσουν νὰ σκοτώνουν καὶ τοὺς ἀνθρώπους.
Τόννους ψάρια ἔχουν σφραγίσει καὶ τὰ παρακολουθοῦν ἀπὸ τὸν δορυφόρο σὲ ποιό πέλαγος εἶναι! Τώρα πάλι παρουσιάσθηκε μιὰ ἀρρώστια, γιὰ τὴν ὁποία βρῆκαν ἕνα ἐμβόλιο ποὺ θὰ εἶναι ὑποχρεωτικὸ καί, γιὰ νὰ τὸ κάνη κανείς, θὰ τὸν σφραγίζουν.
Πόσοι ἄνθρωποι ἐκεῖ εἶναι ἤδη σφραγισμένοι μὲ ἀκτίνες λέιζερ, ἄλλοι στὸ μέτωπο καὶ ἄλλοι στὸ χέρι! Ἀργότερα, ὅποιος δὲν θὰ εἶναι σφραγισμένος μὲ τὸν ἀριθμὸ 666 δὲν θὰ μπορῆ οὔτε νὰ πουλᾶ οὔτε νὰ ἀγοράζη ἢ νὰ παίρνη δάνειο, νὰ διορίζεται κ.λπ.
Μοῦ λέει ὁ λογισμὸς ὅτι ὁ Ἀντίχριστος μὲ αὐτὸ τὸ σύστημα θέλησε νὰ πιάση ὅλον τὸν κόσμο καί, ἅμα δὲν εἶναι κανεὶς στὸ σύστημα, δὲν θὰ μπορῆ νὰ δουλέψη κ.λπ., εἴτε κόκκινος εἴτε μαῦρος εἴτε ἄσπρος, ὅλοι δηλαδή.
Θὰ ἐπιβληθῆ ἔτσι μὲ ἕνα οἰκονομικὸ σύστημα ποὺ θὰ ἐλέγχη τὴν παγκόσμια οἰκονομία, καὶ μόνον ὅσοι θὰ ἔχουν δεχθῆ τὸ σφράγισμα, τὸ χάραγμα μὲ τὸν ἀριθμὸ 666, θὰ μποροῦν νὰ ἔχουν ἐμπορικὲς συναλλαγές.
Τί θὰ πάθουν ὅμως οἱ ἄνθρωποι ποὺ θὰ σφραγίζωνται!... Μοῦ ἔλεγε κάποιος εἰδικὸς ὅτι μὲ τὶς ἀκτίνες λέιζερ παθαίνει κανεὶς βλάβη. Οἱ ἄνθρωποι ποὺ θὰ σφραγισθοῦν θὰ τραβοῦν τὶς ἀκτίνες τοῦ ἥλιου καὶ θὰ πάθουν τέτοια ζημιά, ποὺ θὰ μασοῦν τὴν γλῶσσα τους ἀπὸ τὸν πόνο15.
Ὅσοι δὲν σφραγισθοῦν, θὰ περάσουν καλύτερα ἀπὸ τοὺς ἄλλους, γιατὶ ὁ Χριστὸς ὅσους δὲν σφραγισθοῦν θὰ τοὺς βοηθήση. Δὲν εἶναι μικρὸ πράγμα αὐτό!
– Γέροντα, πότε θὰ τοὺς βοηθήση; Μετά;
– Ὄχι, τότε.
– Ἀφοῦ, Γέροντα, δὲν θὰ μποροῦν νὰ πωλοῦν καὶ νὰ ἀγοράζουν, πῶς θὰ περάσουν καλύτερα;
– Νὰ δῆς, ὁ Θεὸς ξέρει ἕναν τρόπο, τὸν ξέρω καὶ ἐγὼ αὐτόν. Λοιπόν..., μὲ ἀπασχόλησε πολὺ αὐτὸ τὸ θέμα καὶ μοῦ ἔστειλε μετὰ τό... τηλεγράφημα. Ὁ Θεὸς πῶς μᾶς οἰκονομάει, πώ! πώ!
– Γέροντα, γιατί τὸ σφράγισμα λέγεται καὶ χάραγμα;
– Γιατὶ δὲν θὰ εἶναι ἐπιφανειακό. «Χαράσσω» τί θὰ πῆ; Δὲν θὰ πῆ τραβῶ βαθιὰ εὐθεῖες γραμμές, χαρακιές;
Τὸ σφράγισμα θὰ εἶναι χάραγμα, ποὺ θὰ τὸ βάλουν πρῶτα σὲ ὅλα τὰ προϊόντα καὶ μετὰ θὰ ἐπιβάλουν νὰ γίνεται μὲ ἀκτίνες λέιζερ στὸ χέρι ἢ στὸ μέτωπο τῶν ἀνθρώπων.

Προχωροῦν ἀλλὰ δὲν μποροῦμε νὰ ποῦμε ὅτι θὰ γίνη ἐκεῖνο καὶ ἐκεῖνο. Μερικὲς τηλεοράσεις πάλι ποὺ ἔχουν στείλει τελευταῖα στὴν Ἑλλάδα ἔχουν καὶ συσκευὴ ποὺ παρακολουθεῖ αὐτοὺς ποὺ βλέπουν τηλεόραση.
Σὲ λίγο ὅσοι θὰ ἔχουν τηλεόραση θὰ βλέπουν στὴν τηλεόραση καὶ θὰ τοὺς βλέπουν! Δηλαδὴ θὰ παρακολουθοῦν καὶ θὰ παρακολουθοῦνται.
Θὰ ἐλέγχουν οἱ ἄλλοι μὲ τὸ κομπιοῦτερ ὅλη τὴν ζωή τους, τί λένε, τί κάνουν, ὅλα.

Τι δήλωσε στον Guardian
Ο Έντουαρντ Σνόουντεν έχει προειδοποιήσει ότι η τεχνολογία παρακολούθησης είναι τόσο προηγμένη και παρεμβατική σήμερα, που κάνει αυτή που χρησιμοποιούσαν οι υπηρεσίες πληροφοριών των ΗΠΑ και της Βρετανίας, όπως αποκάλυψε το 2013, να μοιάζει με παιδικό παιχνίδι.
«Η τεχνολογία έχει αυξηθεί και έχει τεράστια επιρροή», είπε ο Σνόουντεν, μιλώντας στον Guardian. «Αν σκεφτούμε τι είδαμε το 2013 και τις δυνατότητες των κυβερνήσεων σήμερα, το 2013 μοιάζει με παιδικό παιχνίδι».
Εξέφρασε την ανησυχία του όχι μόνο για τους κινδύνους που φέρνουν οι κυβερνήσεις και η Big Tech, αλλά και οι εμπορικά διαθέσιμες κάμερες παρακολούθησης, η αναγνώριση προσώπου, η τεχνητή νοημοσύνη και το παρεμβατικό λογισμικό κατασκοπείας όπως το Pegasus που χρησιμοποιείται εναντίον αντιφρονούντων και δημοσιογράφων.

Τον Μάιο, ο Διευθύνων Σύμβουλος της OpenAI, κατέθεσε σε μια αίθουσα ακροάσεων της υποεπιτροπής της Γερουσίας στην Washington DC, κάνοντας μια επείγουσα έκκληση προς τους Αμερικανούς νομοθέτες: Δημιουργήστε προσεκτικά μελετημένους κανονισμούς που να αγκαλιάζουν τις ισχυρές υποσχέσεις για το μέλλον που προσφέρει η τεχνητή νοημοσύνη (ΑI) -μετριάζοντας παράλληλα τον κίνδυνο να υπερισχύσει της ανθρωπότητας. Ήταν μια καθοριστική στιγμή τόσο για τον ίδιο όσο και για το μέλλον της AI.
Με την κυκλοφορία του ChatGPT της OpenAI στα τέλη του περασμένου έτους, ο 38χρονος Altman εμφανίστηκε εν μία νυκτί ως το πρότυπο (υπόδειγμα) όσον αφορά μια νέα συλλογή εργαλείων τεχνητής νοημοσύνης που μπορούν να δημιουργούν εικόνες και κείμενα μετά από προτροπές των χρηστών, μια τεχνολογία που ονομάζεται γενετική τεχνητή νοημοσύνη (generative AI). Λίγο μετά την κυκλοφορία του, το ChatGPT έγινε ένα γνωστό όνομα σχεδόν συνώνυμο με την ίδια την τεχνητή νοημοσύνη.
Οι Διευθύνοντες Σύμβουλοι το χρησιμοποιούν για να συντάσσουν μηνύματα ηλεκτρονικού ταχυδρομείου, οι άνθρωποι κατασκευάζουν ιστότοπους χωρίς προηγούμενη εμπειρία κωδικοποίησης και με τη χρήση του διάφοροι μπορεί να πετυχαίνουν σε εξετάσεις σε νομικές έως σε σχολές επιχειρήσεων. Το ίδιο έχει τη δυνατότητα να φέρει επανάσταση σχεδόν σε κάθε κλάδο, συμπεριλαμβανομένης της εκπαίδευσης, της χρηματοδότησης, της γεωργίας και της υγειονομικής περίθαλψης, από χειρουργικές επεμβάσεις μέχρι την ανάπτυξη εμβολίων και φαρμάκων.
Αλλά αυτά τα ίδια εργαλεία έχουν εγείρει ανησυχίες για τα πάντα, από τις απάτες σε σχολεία και την εκτόπιση ανθρώπινων εργαζομένων –ακόμη και μια υπαρξιακή απειλή για την ανθρωπότητα. Η άνοδος της τεχνητής νοημοσύνης, για παράδειγμα, έχει οδηγήσει τους οικονομολόγους να προειδοποιούν ήδη για τις επιπτώσεις στην αγορά εργασίας. Σύμφωνα με εκτιμήσεις της Goldman Sachs, έως και 300 εκατομμύρια θέσεις εργασίας πλήρους απασχόλησης σε όλο τον κόσμο θα μπορούσαν τελικά να αυτοματοποιηθούν με κάποιο τρόπο από τη γενετική τεχνητή νοημοσύνη. Περίπου 14 εκατομμύρια θέσεις θα μπορούσαν να εξαφανιστούν τα επόμενα πέντε χρόνια, σύμφωνα με έκθεση του Παγκόσμιου Οικονομικού Φόρουμ τον Απρίλιο.
Στην κατάθεσή του ενώπιον του Κογκρέσου, ο Altman είπε ότι η δυνατότητα χρήσης της τεχνητής νοημοσύνης για τη χειραγώγηση των ψηφοφόρων και τη στόχευση της παραπληροφόρησης είναι μεταξύ των «τομέων με τη μεγαλύτερη ανησυχία μου».
Δύο εβδομάδες μετά την ακρόαση, ο ίδιος ενώθηκε με εκατοντάδες κορυφαίους επιστήμονες, ερευνητές και ηγέτες της τεχνητής νοημοσύνης υπογράφοντας μια επιστολή δηλώνοντας: «Ο μετριασμός του κινδύνου εξαφάνισης από την τεχνητή νοημοσύνη θα πρέπει να αποτελεί παγκόσμια προτεραιότητα μαζί με άλλους κινδύνους κοινωνικής κλίμακας, όπως οι πανδημίες και ο πυρηνικός πόλεμος».
Η προειδοποίηση καλύφθηκε ευρέως στον Τύπο, με ορισμένους να υποστηρίζουν ότι δείχνει την ανάγκη να ληφθούν πιο σοβαρά υπόψη τέτοια αποκαλυπτικά σενάρια. Τόνισε επίσης μια σημαντική δυναμική στη Silicon Valley: Κορυφαία στελέχη σε μερικές από τις μεγαλύτερες εταιρείες τεχνολογίας λένε στο κοινό ότι η τεχνητή νοημοσύνη έχει τη δυνατότητα να προκαλέσει την ανθρώπινη εξαφάνιση, ενώ παράλληλα αγωνίζονται να επενδύσουν και να αναπτύξουν αυτήν την τεχνολογία σε προϊόντα που προσεγγίζουν δισεκατομμύρια ανθρώπους.
«Ο Kevin Bacon της Silicon Valley»
Αν και ο Altman, ένας για πολλά χρόνια επιχειρηματίας και επενδυτής της Silicon Valley, έμεινε σε μεγάλο βαθμό μακριά από τα φώτα της δημοσιότητας τα προηγούμενα χρόνια, τα βλέμματα έχουν στραφεί σε αυτόν τους τελευταίους μήνες ως το πρότυπο (υπόδειγμα) για την επανάσταση της τεχνητής νοημοσύνης. Αυτό τον έχει επίσης εκθέσει σε αντιδικίες, ρυθμιστικό έλεγχο, επαίνους και καταδίκες σε όλο τον κόσμο.
Εκείνη την ημέρα μπροστά στην υποεπιτροπή της Γερουσίας, ωστόσο, ο Altman περιέγραψε την τρέχουσα άνθηση της τεχνολογίας ως μια κομβική στιγμή.
«Θα είναι η [AI] σαν το τυπογραφείο που διέδιδε τη γνώση, τη δύναμη και τη μάθηση ευρέως σε όλο το τοπίο που ενδυνάμωσε τα συνηθισμένα, καθημερινά άτομα να οδηγηθούν σε μεγαλύτερη άνθηση, που οδήγησε πάνω από όλα σε μεγαλύτερη ελευθερία;» αναρωτήθηκε ρητορικά. «Ή μήπως θα μοιάζει περισσότερο με την ατομική βόμβα, την τεράστια τεχνολογική ανακάλυψη της οποίας όμως οι συνέπειες (σοβαρές, τρομερές) συνεχίζουν να μας στοιχειώνουν μέχρι σήμερα;».
Ο Altman έχει παρουσιάσει εδώ και καιρό τον εαυτό του ως κάποιον που έχει επίγνωση των κινδύνων που εγκυμονεί η τεχνητή νοημοσύνη και έχει δεσμευτεί να προχωρήσει υπεύθυνα. Είναι ένας από τους πολλούς CEOs τεχνολογίας που συναντώνται με ηγέτες του Λευκού Οίκου, συμπεριλαμβανομένης της Αντιπροέδρου Kamala Harris και του Προέδρου Joe Biden, για να τονίσουν τη σημασία της ηθικής και υπεύθυνης ανάπτυξης της AI.
Άλλοι θέλουν ο Altman και το OpenAI να κινούνται πιο επιφυλακτικά.
Ο Elon Musk, ο οποίος βοήθησε στην ίδρυση της OpenAI προτού αποχωρήσει από την ομάδα, και δεκάδες ηγέτες τεχνολογίας, καθηγητές και ερευνητές ανάγκασαν τα εργαστήρια τεχνητής νοημοσύνης όπως το OpenAI να σταματήσουν την εκπαίδευση των πιο ισχυρών συστημάτων τεχνητής νοημοσύνης για τουλάχιστον έξι μήνες, αναφέροντας «βαθείς κινδύνους για κοινωνία και ανθρωπότητα». Ταυτόχρονα, ορισμένοι ειδικοί αμφισβήτησαν τους λόγους για τους οποίους οι συγκεκριμένοι υπέγραψαν αυτή την επιστολή, αναφέροντας ότι ίσως να προσπάθησαν να διατηρήσουν το ανταγωνιστικό τους πλεονέκτημα έναντι άλλων εταιρειών.
Ο Altman είπε ότι συμφώνησε με μέρη της επιστολής, συμπεριλαμβανομένου ότι «η γραμμή ασφαλείας πρέπει να αυξηθεί», αλλά είπε ότι η παύση δεν θα ήταν ο «βέλτιστος τρόπος» για την αντιμετώπιση των προκλήσεων. Ο Aaron Levie, ο Διευθύνων Σύμβουλος της εταιρείας επιχειρηματικού cloud Box και ένας μακροχρόνιος φίλος του Altman που αναδείχθηκε μαζί του στον κόσμο των startup, είπε στο CNN ότι ο Altman είναι «εσωστρεφής» και ότι θέλει να συζητά νέες ιδέες, να λαμβάνει διαφορετικές απόψεις και να ενθαρρύνει ατελείωτα σχόλια για ό,τι κι αν δουλεύει.
«Πάντα τον έβρισκα να κάνει απίστευτα αυτοκριτική στις ιδέες και πρόθυμο να λαμβάνει κάθε είδους σχόλια για οποιοδήποτε θέμα με το οποίο ασχολήθηκε όλα αυτά τα χρόνια», είπε ο Levie.
Αλλά ο Bern Elliot, αναλυτής της Gartner Research, τόνισε το περίφημο κλισέ: Υπάρχει κίνδυνος όταν βάζεις όλα τα αυγά σου σε ένα καλάθι, ανεξάρτητα από το πόσο μεγάλη εμπιστοσύνη μπορείς να έχεις ότι θα τα καταφέρεις. «Πολλά πράγματα μπορούν να συμβούν σε ένα καλάθι», πρόσθεσε.
Οι προκλήσεις που έρχονται
Όταν ξεκίνησε η OpenAI, ο Altman είπε στο CNN το 2015 ότι ήθελε να κατευθύνει το μονοπάτι της AI, αντί να ανησυχεί για τις πιθανές βλάβες και να μην κάνει τίποτα. «Κοιμάμαι καλύτερα γνωρίζοντας ότι μπορώ να έχω κάποια επιρροή σήμερα», είπε. Παρά την ηγετική του θέση, ο Altman λέει ότι εξακολουθεί να ανησυχεί για την τεχνολογία. «Προετοιμάζομαι για επιβίωση», είπε το 2016 στο New Yorker, σημειώνοντας πολλά πιθανά σενάρια καταστροφής, συμπεριλαμβανομένου της «A.I. που μας επιτίθεται».

Ορισμένοι ειδικοί στον κλάδο της τεχνητής νοημοσύνης λένε, ωστόσο, ότι η εστίαση της προσοχής σε μακρινά αποκαλυπτικά σενάρια μπορεί να αποσπάσει την προσοχή από τις πιο άμεσες βλάβες που μπορεί να προκαλέσει μια νέα γενιά ισχυρών εργαλείων τεχνητής νοημοσύνης στους ανθρώπους και τις κοινότητες.
Ο Rowan Curran, αναλυτής στην εταιρεία ερευνών αγοράς Forrester, αναγνώρισε τις εύλογες ανησυχίες σχετικά με τη διασφάλιση ότι τα δεδομένα εκπαίδευσης, ειδικά για τεράστια μοντέλα, έχουν ελάχιστη προκατάληψη –ή έχουν μια προκατάληψη που είναι κατανοητή και μπορεί να μετριαστεί.
«Η ιδέα μιας “αποκάλυψης της τεχνητής νοημοσύνης” ως ένα ρεαλιστικό σενάριο που παρουσιάζει κάθε είδους κίνδυνο για την ανθρωπότητα –ιδιαίτερα βραχυπρόθεσμα και μεσοπρόθεσμα, είναι απλά μια υποθετική τεχνο-μυθολογία», είπε. «Η συνεχής εστίαση σε αυτό ως ένας από τους μεγάλους κινδύνους που έρχεται μαζί με την πρόοδο της τεχνητής νοημοσύνης αποσπά την προσοχή από τις πολύ πραγματικές προκλήσεις που έχουμε σήμερα προκειμένου να μειώσουμε τις τρέχουσες και μελλοντικές βλάβες από δεδομένα και μοντέλα που εφαρμόζονται άδικα από ανθρώπινους παράγοντες».
Στη μεγαλύτερη ίσως σαρωτική προσπάθεια μέχρι σήμερα, ο Πρόεδρος των ΗΠΑ, Joe Biden, παρουσίασε ένα εκτελεστικό διάταγμα νωρίτερα αυτή την εβδομάδα που θα απαιτεί από τους προγραμματιστές ισχυρών συστημάτων τεχνητής νοημοσύνης να μοιράζονται τα αποτελέσματα των δοκιμών ασφαλείας τους με την ομοσπονδιακή κυβέρνηση προτού δημοσιοποιηθούν, εάν ενέχουν κινδύνους για την εθνική ασφάλεια, την οικονομία ή κινδύνους για την υγεία.
Μετά την ακρόαση στη Γερουσία, η Emily Bender, καθηγήτρια στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Washington και διευθύντρια του Εργαστηρίου Υπολογιστικής Γλωσσολογίας, εξέφρασε ανησυχίες για το πώς φαίνεται το μέλλον με την τεχνητή νοημοσύνη, ακόμη κι αν ελέγχεται σε μεγάλο βαθμό. «Αν πιστεύουν ειλικρινά ότι αυτό θα μπορούσε να προκαλέσει την ανθρώπινη εξαφάνιση, τότε γιατί να μην σταματήσει;» αναρωτήθηκε.
Η Margaret O’Mara, ιστορικός τεχνολογίας και καθηγήτρια στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Washington, τόνισε ότι η χάραξη πολιτικής πρέπει να βασίζεται σε πολλαπλές προοπτικές και ενδιαφέροντα, όχι μόνο από έναν ή λίγους ανθρώπους, και να διαμορφώνεται με γνώμονα το δημόσιο συμφέρον. «Η πρόκληση με την τεχνητή νοημοσύνη είναι ότι μόνο λίγοι άνθρωποι και εταιρείες καταλαβαίνουν πραγματικά πώς λειτουργεί και ποιες είναι οι συνέπειες της χρήσης της», τόνισε η O’Mara, σημειώνοντας ομοιότητες με τον κόσμο της πυρηνικής φυσικής πριν και κατά τη διάρκεια της ανάπτυξης του Manhattan Project, την ατομική βόμβα.
«Αυτή η φορά όμως μοιάζει με αυτό που έκαναν ο Gates και ο Jobs με τους υπολογιστές στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1980 και τη στιγμή του λογισμικού του 1990», είπε. «Υπάρχει πραγματική ελπίδα ότι μπορούμε να έχουμε τεχνολογία που να κάνει τα πράγματα καλύτερα, αν οι άνθρωποι που την κάνουν είναι καλοί άνθρωποι, έξυπνοι και νοιάζονται για τα σωστά πράγματα. Ο Sam το ενσαρκώνει όλο αυτό όσον αφορά την τεχνητή νοημοσύνη αυτή τη στιγμή».
Ο κόσμος υπολογίζει στον Altman να ενεργήσει προς το συμφέρον της ανθρωπότητας, καθώς η τεχνολογία, κατά τη δική του παραδοχή, θα μπορούσε να είναι όπλο μαζικής καταστροφής.
Αν και μπορεί να είναι ένας έξυπνος και ικανός ηγέτης, εξακολουθεί να είναι ακριβώς αυτό: Ένα και μόνο άτομο.
